Small business tech glossary

Plain definitions of common QR code and small business AI terms.

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
A
Analytics

Data a tool records about how something is used, such as how many people scanned a QR code or opened a page; useful only when tied to a clear question you want answered.

C
Chatbot

Software that answers questions in a conversation, often on a website or messaging app; modern ones use a language model and can be given a set of approved answers to stay accurate.

D
Dynamic QR code

A QR code whose destination can be changed after it is printed, because it points to a short redirect link rather than directly to the final address. It usually depends on a provider staying in business.

E
Error correction

A built-in feature of QR codes that lets a code still scan when part of it is dirty, scratched or covered, by storing the data with some redundancy.

H
Hallucination

Confident but wrong output from an AI tool; a key reason to review AI drafts and to limit a business chatbot to approved information.

L
Landing page

The single page a link or QR code sends a visitor to; a focused landing page that loads fast on a phone usually works better than a busy homepage.

Large language model

A model trained to predict text that powers most current AI writing tools and chatbots; often shortened to LLM.

P
Payment link

A web address that opens a checkout for a specific amount or product, which can be turned into a QR code so a customer can pay from their phone.

Prompt

The instruction you give an AI writing tool or chatbot; clear, specific prompts with context generally produce more useful results.

Q
QR code

A square pattern a phone camera can read to open a link or action instantly, removing the need to type a web address.

R
Redirect

A short link that forwards a visitor to another address; dynamic QR codes rely on a redirect so the destination can be updated later.

Review gating

Steering only happy customers toward leaving a public review while routing unhappy ones elsewhere; major review platforms prohibit it, so a QR code should link to the honest public review page for everyone.

S
Scan rate

The share of people who actually scan a QR code out of those who could have; placement, a clear call to action, and a reason to scan affect it more than the code itself.

Static QR code

A QR code with the destination encoded directly into the pattern; it cannot be changed after printing, but it does not depend on any provider staying online.

T
Tracking

Recording that a scan or click happened, usually through a dynamic link, so you can see how often a code is used and from where.

U
UTM parameters

Short labels added to the end of a link that let analytics tools tell which campaign, placement or code a visitor came from.

V
Vendor lock-in

A situation where switching providers is hard because your setup depends on one company; common with dynamic QR codes, since the redirect lives on the provider.

W
Workflow

A defined sequence of steps a task follows; mapping a workflow first makes it clearer where a QR code or an AI tool could actually help.
